Q. So this really was a
concept developed by teens for teens?
Absolutely! We bounced ideas and
designs off Austin’s friends and created a logo and a name that the
teens felt was much better than "Student Driver" and at the same time,
was bold and noticeable. And that is how Rookie Driver®
products were launched.
These products are a win-win
situation for everyone involved – the other drivers are alerted to the
teens “in-training” status, parents feel safer with their teen at the
wheel knowing others are aware of their inexperience, and the teens are
not embarrassed by using the products because they like the design.
Q. What does die-cut mean in
reference to the magnets?
We created a very distinctive logo
and design shape.... and we want to ensure that not only the words
Rookie Driver®, but also the logo 'symbol' is universally and
instantly recognized by other drivers. So, by die cutting the
magnets and stickers in the shape of our logo, the Rookie Driver® logo
automatically makes other drivers aware that there is a new teen
driver behind the wheel.
Q. Can the stickers be
re-used?
The stickers cannot be reused.
However, they are easily removed and leave no gummy residue behind
on your vehicle.
Q. What prompted you to
develop this product?
I have to admit, I was nervous the first time I sat in the passenger
seat of my SUV with my 15-year-old son Austin at the wheel.   He had just
gotten his driving permit and he wanted to drive home.   Austin was doing
a good job cautiously navigating thru one of the busiest intersections
in our town and into a construction area.   A semi-tractor trailer behind
us felt we were driving to slow, so he drove very close to the back of
our SUV, eventually blowing his horn in frustration at Austin’s slow
inexperienced pace.   Of course, this startled both of us and I quickly
turned around to see what the semi truck driver was doing which, in
turn, scared Austin, affecting his concentration and the safety of not
only us but all vehicles around us.
I immediately realized the trouble
was that the semi truck driver had no way of knowing Austin was a new
student driver, and neither did any of the other drivers around us.   Had
the other drivers known Austin was a “Rookie Driver®”, they would have
naturally had more patience and would have given him more space to
navigate thru the construction zone.
Q. Aren’t “Student Driver”
stickers already available?
Actually it was Austin’s suggestion
that we work together to develop a system to alert other drivers that a
new teen driver is at the wheel …with a design that would be more
acceptable than what is currently available (no teen wants a STUDENT
DRIVER sticker stuck on the car) …and I wanted something that was easily
removed when Austin was not driving.
Q. Is this a family business?
Most definitely. I was born and
raised in Spring Lake, Michigan and for the past five years have teamed
with my husband, Jeff, as a Director-of-Regional-Support for a national
smoothie and coffee franchise company.   We have been responsible for
marketing and developing new franchises for the state of
Michigan.
We have 3 sons, Aaron 22, Austin 15
and Taylor 13.   I learned quickly that working out of our home office
offered me the opportunity to become very active in our teen-age sons
lives.
Austin has learned a lot about
marketing, having spent the last five years listening and participating
with us as we marketed and developed our Michigan franchise territory.
This year Aaron, our oldest,
graduated from college with a degree in sales and marketing and he has also been
assisting us with this project – so, Rookie Driver® has truly
become a “family business”. Q. Are these items available
for bulk purchase, like for drivers’ education schools? Public high
school programs as well as private?
Absolutely! We even provide free
promotional stickers to drivers’ education schools to hand out to
their students and parents. And we sell to schools at wholesale
prices so they are able to make a profit on their sales of all
Rookie Driver® products.
